Scott Janousek @ Adobe MAX 2007 - FREE Book Contest!
September 28th, 2007 at 3:29 pmPosted by: admin
Hi all. Tomorrow, I (Scott Janousek, speaking here), head off to the Adobe MAX (Chicago) for a few days.
If you're there, and interested in talking about Flash Mobile, look me up ...
Also, just so you know ... I started a little book contest, where if you find me and say the magic phrase as laid out here, I'll hand over a copy of the Foundation Flash Applications for Mobile Devices book to you (I am only bringing 3 copies, so first come, first serve type business!).
For more details about the contest, check out my blog.
Packing Lite: A mobile media interface design primer (devnet article)
August 30th, 2007 at 12:09 amPosted by: sjanousek
I just posted about a new Adobe devnet article written by David Carroll (Professor of Media Design at Parsons - The New School for Design) that may be very practical to those just starting out developing for mobile using Flash Lite.
It covers some useful and current material on transferring content to your mobile device (Nokia mobile handsets in particular) that we do not have in the book (due to it becoming quickly dated material if we did so!).
This the what David had to say about his short article:
This article covers some of the survival skills needed in going mobile and packing lite, Flash Lite, that is. I’ll describe how to get started, the unique considerations of designing for mobile devices, where to get more information, and what lies ahead. We’ll take a look at both design and development problems you may encounter. Finally, we’ll examine the mobile space as an interdisciplinary endeavor of left and right brain working together to solve the user experience problems of mobile media interfaces.
Here is a break down of some of the other areas of the article that you may find useful in addition to our book. Most of it relates to "mobile workflow" (or how you get your Flash Lite content from your desktop transfered to your device(s) for testing).
- Introduction
- Installing and configuring authoring tools and device connections
- Creating and transferring a test file
- Installing a Flash Lite SWF on a Nokia S60 device using a Mac with Bluetooth
- Sending SWFs as a Bluetooth message with a Mac
- Installing a Flash Lite SWF on a Nokia S60 device using Windows with Nokia PC Suite
- Viewing Flash Lite SWFs on your Nokia S60 device
- Adjusting your mindset
- Analyzing a quick 4-way menu example
Again, if you're just starting with Flash Lite and mobile in general, it's a must read.
I would recommend reading the primer, before, or during the reading of first few chapters in our book.

Yet another community review on the book
May 31st, 2007 at 10:11 amPosted by: flashmobilebook
Here's yet another review from Hayden, a noted Flash Sound guru, and who runs the Flash Mobile (aka Flash Lite) forum over at FlashKit.
Snippet:
” … Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Flash Lite mobile development. It offers great tips and serves as a useful reference for those already experienced with mobile development, and should help to smooth the learning curve for those new to Flash Lite development. For more details on the book, visit the web site, www.flashmobilebook.com.”
Our book reviewed over at amazon.com
May 31st, 2007 at 8:43 amPosted by: flashmobilebook
It's been more than a few months since our book (Foundation Flash Applications for Mobile Devices) arrived on shelves.
We came across a review on amazon for our book over at amazon. 4/5 stars.
Here is what one reader had to say:
"This book will take a flash developer a long way towards publishing applications on mobile phones. I didn't see anything on utilizing web services (something that is easy to do with flash lite 2.x) nor how to create .cab files (which was why I actually bought the book), but it covers just about everything else to a good level of working depth.
I wouldn't suggest this book to someone without any flash actionscript experience (or at least some object oriented programming experience) but you don't have to be a comp. sci. major either. Well written and not too witty (some programmer books can read like geek joke books) this book approaches the flash mobile development process from a practical hands on stance which works well with those who like to get their hands dirty while learning.
Strongly recommended reading for next gen phone app development in flash."
We'd love to see more feedback from the community.
