Packing Lite: A mobile media interface design primer (devnet article)
Author: sjanousekI just posted about a new Adobe devnet article written by David Carroll (Professor of Media Design at Parsons - The New School for Design) that may be very practical to those just starting out developing for mobile using Flash Lite.
It covers some useful and current material on transferring content to your mobile device (Nokia mobile handsets in particular) that we do not have in the book (due to it becoming quickly dated material if we did so!).
This the what David had to say about his short article:
This article covers some of the survival skills needed in going mobile and packing lite, Flash Lite, that is. I’ll describe how to get started, the unique considerations of designing for mobile devices, where to get more information, and what lies ahead. We’ll take a look at both design and development problems you may encounter. Finally, we’ll examine the mobile space as an interdisciplinary endeavor of left and right brain working together to solve the user experience problems of mobile media interfaces.
Here is a break down of some of the other areas of the article that you may find useful in addition to our book. Most of it relates to "mobile workflow" (or how you get your Flash Lite content from your desktop transfered to your device(s) for testing).
- Introduction
- Installing and configuring authoring tools and device connections
- Creating and transferring a test file
- Installing a Flash Lite SWF on a Nokia S60 device using a Mac with Bluetooth
- Sending SWFs as a Bluetooth message with a Mac
- Installing a Flash Lite SWF on a Nokia S60 device using Windows with Nokia PC Suite
- Viewing Flash Lite SWFs on your Nokia S60 device
- Adjusting your mindset
- Analyzing a quick 4-way menu example
Again, if you're just starting with Flash Lite and mobile in general, it's a must read.
I would recommend reading the primer, before, or during the reading of first few chapters in our book.
